THE CHAIR FOR ISLAMIC STUDIES & RESEARCH (Estd.1988)

The Chair for Islamic Studies & Research under the University of Calicut was instituted by the Federation of Muslim Colleges, Calicut (Reg.No.S.161/1986) by remitting the required corpus fund endowment as per rules in force. The activities of the Chair were inaugurated by the Hon.ble Chancellor, His Excellency the Governor of Kerala Shri.P.Ramachandran on 24 th January 1988. Calicut University allotted 20 cents of land for the construction of own building for the Chair when Dr.K.K.N Kurup was the Vice Chancellor.The donor agency,Federation of Muslim Colleges,Calicut completed the construction of ground floor and first floor of the building with the support of member colleges, philanthropists and the public.Dr.M.P.Addussamad Samadani, M.P (Rajyasabha) allotted Rs.15 lakhs for the construction of the ground floor and Jb.E.Ahamed Sahib,Hon.ble Union Minister allotted Rs.15 lahks for the construction of the first floor.Jb.P.V.Abdul Wahab.M.P (Rajyasabha)has allotted Rs.15 lakhs towards the construction of second floor of the building.

The Kerala State Waqf Board, Government of Kerala has been very sympathetic to the cause of the Chair since its inception. The contribution of late Jb.Syed Ummer Bafaki Thangal as the Chairman of Kerala State Waqf Board was instrumental in setting up the Chair. During the tenure of late Jb.Umarali Shihab Thangal as Chairman, the Kerala State Waqf Board started sanctioning Rs.1 lakh per year towards the activities of the Chair which was enhanced to Rs. 2 lakhs during the tenure of Jb.Rasheedali Shihab Thangal as Chairman.The present Board under the Chairmanship of Adv.T.K Hamza has enhanced this grant to Rs.3 lakhs per year.

The Chair’s research and studies projects aim to :

  • Promote research on history, tradition, philosophy, culture and heritage of Islam in general and Muslim community of Kerala in particular.
  • Collect historical data relates to the various aspects of the origin and spread of Islam and its cultural assimilation in Kerala through the ages.
  • Conduct short-term courses, workshops, seminars and extension lectures on Islamic topics.
  • Organize social surveys to provide insight into the contemporary trends in Muslim society.
  • Academic linkage with centers of learning on Islam and Muslims for collaborative research and resource sharing.

Vision

The Chair for Islamic Studies and Research is envisioned as an Advanced Centre of Excellence for research on social, political, cultural, and intellectual trends and movements in contemporary society with special focus on Muslim societies and to promote a better understanding of Muslims with an objective of fostering communal harmony and pluralism .The Chair is keen on promoting the values of patriotism,nationalism,secularism,democracy and harmony among different social and religious groups.

Mission

  • Play a key role in enhancing knowledge of the diversity of Islamic tradition, cultures and interpretations, the history of Islam’s rich intellectual and cultural heritage, and the relationship of Islam and Muslim-majority societies with other communities and faiths.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research on history, tradition, philosophy, economic and scientific principles, culture and heritage of Islam in general and Muslim community of Kerala in particular.
  • Collect historical data related to the various aspects of the origin and spread of Islam and its cultural assimilation in Kerala throughout the ages.
  • Conduct short-term courses, workshops, seminars and extension lectures on Islamic themes.
  • Organize social surveys to provide insight into the contemporary trends in Muslim society.
  • Establish academic linkage with centers of learning, institutions, organizations, research funding agencies and NGOs on Islam and Muslims for collaborative research and resource sharing.
  • Provide a common platform to bridge academic community with the public, and participate in Calicut University’s ongoing efforts to engage the Muslim community of Malabar.
